ImageThe National Resistance Movement (NRM)’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) has endorsed Anita Annet Among as Speaker and Thomas Tayebwa as Deputy Speaker for the upcoming 12th Parliament. This move confirms the party’s choice for top House leadership after the 2026 general elections.

The decision came during a CEC meeting on January 27, 2026, at State House in Entebbe, party officials confirmed.

It paves the way for the two to run as NRM’s official candidates when the new Parliament starts its first sitting.

“I’m over the moon!” Speaker Among told reporters Tuesday night.

Among, Uganda’s current Speaker since 2022, made history as the first woman in the role. She stepped in after Jacob Oulanya’s death in Seattle, US, in March 2022. Her time in office has seen busy legislative work, including passing major government bills and tough oversight debates.

Tayebwa, current Deputy Speaker and MP for Ruhinda North, earns praise in NRM circles for guiding Parliament’s business and handling fiery sessions. His backing points to steady leadership as the new term begins.

CEC members say the choice keeps Parliament stable and matches NRM’s goals with House leaders.

In Uganda, MPs elect the Speaker and Deputy at the new Parliament’s opening. NRM’s big majority usually ensures its picks win.

Parties are wrapping up plans as the new MPs prepare to swear in soon.
