President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called on residents of Masaka City and the wider Greater Masaka sub-region to support National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidates and actively participate in government wealth-creation programmes, saying peace and economic empowerment remain central to Uganda’s development.

Addressing a large campaign rally at Liberation Square in Masaka City, Museveni, the NRM presidential candidate, said the stability enjoyed in the region for the last four decades has created an environment in which development and political activity can thrive.

He described peace as the NRM’s most significant contribution, attributing it to the party’s rejection of sectarian politics based on tribe, religion or gender.

According to the President, the peaceful environment has enabled investments in infrastructure and service delivery across the country.

Museveni cited improvements to key road networks, recalling that routes such as Katonga–Kabale were in poor condition when the NRM took power in 1986 but have since been rehabilitated.

He added that electricity has been extended to all district headquarters and many sub-counties.

On water and agriculture, the President said more than 200 villages in Masaka District and Masaka City now have access to piped water.

The president stressed the need to complement safe water for domestic use with irrigation to improve agricultural productivity and household incomes.

Museveni cautioned that Masaka could benefit more from government programmes if voters consistently elected leaders who actively follow up on local priorities. He noted that while some issues are addressed at the national level, others require committed and vocal Members of Parliament.

Turning to income generation, Museveni urged residents to move away from subsistence farming and focus on wealth creation. He reiterated the NRM’s four-acre model, which promotes a mix of coffee, food crops, fruits and livestock enterprises adding that Masaka has received five million coffee seedlings and 440,000 fruit seedlings under government support programmes.

The President also announced plans to introduce targeted funds for fishermen, boda boda riders and residents of informal settlements, saying job creation would largely be driven by commercial agriculture and industrialisation.

NRM National Vice Chairperson Al Hajji Moses Kigongo urged residents to mobilise support for the party, calling for unity before, during and after the elections. Speaker of Parliament and NRM Second National Vice Chairperson (Female), Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, highlighted government interventions that have benefited women and farmers, including new markets, coffee processing equipment and the elevation of Masaka to city status.

Buganda Sub-region NRM Vice Chairperson Haruna Kasolo commended security agencies for maintaining a peaceful environment that allows free political participation. Meanwhile, Masaka City Woman MP flag bearer Justine Nameere raised concerns about voter intimidation, calling for respect for democratic freedoms.

The rally drew senior NRM leaders, local officials and thousands of supporters as Museveni continued his campaign tour of Greater Masaka ahead of the 2026 general elections.
