The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abas Byakagaba has met leaders of the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda to discuss security preparations and peace-building ahead of the 2026 general elections.
IGP Byakagaba visited the Council offices in Mengo on Friday, 2nd January 2026, for a courtesy meeting with religious leaders, chaired by His Grace Dr. Kazimba Mugalu, Archbishop of the Church of Uganda.
The meeting focused on ensuring security during the upcoming elections, with religious leaders raising concerns about public order, political tensions, and the need for restraint among political actors and their supporters.
During the discussions, the IGP thanked faith leaders for their ongoing role in promoting peace, unity, and moral guidance, especially during politically sensitive periods.
“We appreciate the partnership between the Uganda Police Force and religious leaders in promoting peace and stability. Faith institutions play a critical role in calming communities and encouraging lawful conduct,” Byakagaba said.
Archbishop Kazimba highlighted the importance of peaceful participation in the electoral process, urging security agencies to act professionally and impartially.
“The Church remains committed to preaching peace and urging citizens to engage in the electoral process without violence,” he stated.

In response, the IGP reassured the Council that the police are taking proactive measures to safeguard the electoral period and will continue engaging all stakeholders to address emerging concerns promptly.
“We are listening, and we are committed to ensuring a secure environment before, during, and after the elections,” Byakagaba said.
The meeting highlighted the critical role of collaboration between security agencies and religious institutions in maintaining peace and stability as Uganda prepares for the polls.
As Uganda approaches the 2026 polls, such collaboration is seen as vital in fostering trust, calm, and orderly participation, ensuring that the democratic process unfolds peacefully across the country.
