Fish farmers in Buikwe district are celebrating fresh hope after the government recently delivered a major boost to their industry through a new consignment of catfish.

According to James Katali, the Senior Fisheries Officer for Buikwe, the Bukasa Fish Farmers Group received a total of 6,000 fish, partly from the Agriculture Extension Grant and partly from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, working with the Buikwe District Local Government.

“The district has handed over 2,000 catfish from the Agriculture Extension Grant and an additional 4,000 fish from MAAIF to the farmers,” he said.

Steven Bogere, the Chairperson of the Bukasa Fish Farmers Group, said that the support is expected to strengthen production, incomes, and food security in the area.

“This donation will greatly improve our livelihoods and motivate farmers to expand their work,” he noted.

With fish farming increasingly seen as a reliable pathway to rural prosperity, officials say the latest support reinforces national efforts to enhance nutrition and modernize small-scale aquaculture across Uganda.

The donation targets boosting fish production, farmer incomes, and long-term food security in Buikwe district.
